Healing After Implant Surgery: What You Need to Know

Getting a dental implant is a big step toward restoring your smile and improving your oral health. Proper aftercare is essential after implant surgery. It helps prevent infection, reduces discomfort, and helps you return to your normal routine more quickly. In this article, we’ll walk you through the key steps for taking care of your mouth after dental implant surgery.

Take It Easy Right After Surgery

After your implant is placed, your body needs time to rest and heal. Here are a few things to keep in mind during the first few days after the surgery:

  • Avoid physical activity, including heavy lifting or strenuous exercise, for 3–4 days.
  • Keep your head slightly elevated, even while sleeping, to help reduce swelling.
  • Avoid touching the implant site with your fingers or tongue.
  • Rest as much as possible. Your body heals best when it’s not under stress.

Manage Pain and Swelling

Some soreness and swelling are normal, especially in the first few days. To stay comfortable:

  • Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Motrin) as prescribed for pain.
  • Use an ice pack on your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) during the first 24 hours.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Keeping your mouth clean is essential to prevent infection and support proper healing of your dental implant. However, it's important to be gentle around the surgical site.

  • Brush your teeth carefully using an extra-soft toothbrush. It's best to start with a new toothbrush after surgery to avoid introducing bacteria.
  • After 24 hours, begin gently rinsing with a warm saltwater solution (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) 2–3 times per day.
  • Avoid using mouthwashes that contain alcohol, as they can irritate the tissues.
  • Do not spit forcefully or rinse aggressively, as this may disrupt the healing site.
  • If you wear a denture or partial, clean it thoroughly before putting it back in your mouth to reduce the risk of infection.

Eat Soft Foods

What you eat plays a big role in your healing process. Follow these dietary tips:

  • Eat soft, cool or room-temperature foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, scrambled eggs, and soups.
  • Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or sticky foods that could irritate the area.
  • Don’t use a straw for at least a week. Suction can disrupt the healing process.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking and alcohol can severely affect healing and increase the risk of implant failure.

  • Avoid smoking for at least 1–2 weeks after surgery (ideally, quit altogether).
  • Alcohol can interfere with medications and healing. Avoid it for at least 3–4 days after the surgery.

Watch for Signs of Complications

While most dental implants heal without problems, important to recognize signs that something may be wrong. Contact our office or go to urgent care if you experience:

  • Persistent or worsening pain after several days
  • Swelling that increases after the third day
  • Pus or unusual discharge from the implant site
  • A bad taste in your mouth that doesn’t go away
  • Fever or chills

Follow-Up Appointments Matter

Regular checkups are vital for monitoring the healing process and making sure the implant is fusing properly with the bone.

  • Return to the clinic in 7–10 days to have stitches removed.
  • It typically takes 4 to 6 months for the implant to fully bond with your jawbone.
  • Eventually, your dentist will take impressions and fit your final crown once healing is complete.
