Whitmarsh March Point Landfill Cleanup Project
June 25, 2026 - Swinomish staff received reports from the community about a strong odor near the Whitmarsh March Point Landfill, located on property bordering the northwest corner of the Reservation.
Out of an abundance of caution, please be informed that we are monitoring concerns related to the Whitmarsh March Point Landfill cleanup project and are working closely with Swinomish DEP, Skagit County, and WA Department of Ecology to gather more information. Some individuals have reported symptoms including irritated eyes, sore throat, nausea, and headaches. At this time, we do not know what substances may be present in the air or whether there are any associated health risks. Air sampling has been conducted and we are awaiting test results, which are expected early next week.
While we await air sampling results, the Public Health Officer recommends that community members take reasonable precautions if they notice strong odors in the area:
Limit time outdoors when odors are present.
Use air purifiers with activated charcoal filters if available.
Pay attention to any symptoms, and seek medical care if they are severe or start to worsen.
We understand that community members may have questions and concerns, and we are committed to providing updates as additional information becomes available.
