Whitmarsh March Point Landfill Cleanup Project

July 8, 2026 - Swinomish staff received reports from the community about a strong odor near the Whitmarsh March Point Landfill, located on property bordering the northwest corner of the Reservation. This cleanup project is expected to be completed by October of 2026.

The Washington State Department of Ecology completed its review of the air sampling results collected near the Whitmarsh March Point Landfill. Some chemicals associated with the landfill were detected at elevated levels; however, the concentrations do not indicate an immediate threat to public health.

Chemicals detected in the air sample include naphthalene and 1-methylnaphthalene. The levels of 1-methylnaphthalene are above the state's long-term exposure recommendation, but remain low for shorter-term exposures. Strong odors may cause symptoms such as eye irritation, sore throat, headaches, dizziness, and nausea.

The Public Health Officer continues to recommend that community members take reasonable precautions if they notice strong odors in the area:

Limit time outdoors when odors are present.
Use air purifiers with activated charcoal filters if available.
Pay attention to any symptoms, and seek medical care if they are severe or start to worsen.

We understand that community members may have questions and concerns. Public Health is available to answer questions and will continue to share updates as the Department of Ecology conducts additional air quality samples.
