Environmental Education

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community has a unique Environmental Education Program that is run by their Water Resources Program. The Environmental Educator, with help from the Water Resources Specialists and field technicians, has created a wonderful mirad of water quality-based educational outreach opportunities for the tribal community and the surrounding area. The Environmental Educator has worked with a variety of groups, including the La Conner schools, Swinomish Daycare, Swinomish Birth-to-Six, Swinomish Recreation, and La Conner Boys and Girls Club. In addition, the Environmental Educator gives presentations at local community events such as Swinomish Earth Enhancement days, Spartina Dig days, Penn Cove Water Festival, and various different gatherings. The Environmental Educator works with Tox in a Box(c)(r), an educational toolkit created by the University of Washington that specializes in teaching the basics of toxicology. The Environmental Educator also uses EnviroScape(c), a watershed module that demonstrates how water quality is affected by pollution and industry.
